CSCS Card Renewal Changes in 2025: What You Need to Know
If you manage a construction team, you've probably heard the news: from February 2025, CSCS labourer cards are now valid for just 2 years instead of the previous 5.
That's a big change — and it affects around 500,000 workers across the UK.
What changed?
The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) reduced the validity period for labourer (green) cards from 5 years to 2 years. The change took effect in February 2025 and applies to all new cards issued from that date.
Existing 5-year cards remain valid until their printed expiry date, but renewals will be issued under the new 2-year rule.
Why does it matter?
An expired CSCS card means no site access. It's that simple. Most major contractors and site managers will turn away workers without a valid card — no exceptions.
With cards now expiring more than twice as fast, the window for catching a renewal is much smaller. What used to be a once-every-5-years admin task is now a regular chore.
What should you do?
Here's what we recommend for construction firms:
- Audit your team's cards now. Know who has 5-year cards (still valid until expiry) and who has the new 2-year cards.
- Set reminders early. Don't wait until the last month. A 90-day reminder gives you time to book the renewal course and process the paperwork.
- Track centrally. If you're relying on individual workers to manage their own renewals, you'll get caught out. Use a single system to track all cards.
